Social networking traffic and the sites you should know about

A high number of users on this site frequently ask "why is social networking traffic so important to a website and how can it improve sales and/or ad dollars?". Well in this article I will go over different social networks and the traffic they tend to attract.

As some of you may know, social networking traffic can be very niche, niche meaning that a large number of the traffic ascending from the site will fall into the 80%-20% realm, meaning 80% of the users will be experienced in surfing content presented via the social network and the other 20% will be new users or generic web serfers.

The 20% is where you will get the most revenue from, and in a lot of cases this number tends to grow over time with more popular content since the content appeals to search engines such as Google. Google for example will pick up on your content leading to higher SERP if hundreds of blogs write about it and isn't this why you work so HARD!

If we look DIGG.com, most of the traffic you get from DIGG will be active users and they probably won't click on your ads. But if your content reaches outside of the typical DIGG/tech reader, you can convert higher ad impressions. Most active news/content readers are expierenced enough online that they don't click blindly on ads, in some cases this group of users will block ads via the browser. There are several ad blocking solutions out there, however your common web surfer isn't aware of them and this shouldn't be a concern in your content production.

Let's move on to another site, stumbleupon.com.

"StumbleUpon uses collaborative filtering (an automated process combining human opinions with machine learning of personal preference) to create virtual communities of like-minded websurfers."

Now as a webmaster, whenever I publish content to one of my sites I always make sure that I use my StumbleUpon toolbar to "stumble" the  content I have just produced. Why is this important? Submitting your content to StumbleUpon is increasing your viral traffic.

"Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes."

This StumbleUpon process takes no more then 10 seconds and could land you 10-10,000 hits to your webpage. All it takes is a few members to "like" your page and the viral process starts to roll. Also, since the service is like a "social bookmarking" site, you build valuable backlinks.
